Winery

La Lagune, was classified as a 3rd growth in the 1855 Bordeaux classification of Médoc’s wines and is the first cru classé that you pass driving northwest out of Bordeaux. Its handsome château dates from 1715 while its vineyards date from at least 1724. Jean- Jacques Frey bought the property in 2000 and handed control to daughter Caroline, a recent graduate in oenology at Bordeaux University. Investments in the vineyards and winery are already paying dividends as the quality of wines has clearly risen. Aside from the main label or ‘Grand Vin’, they also produce Moulin La Lagune and Mademoiselle L. The visually stunning Patrick Baggio designed winery has also picked up several design awards. A property to watch.

Viticulture

The estate comprises 70 ha of vines which are planted on a croupe of Mindelian gravel, a sort of sandy-gravelly mix overlaying quarternary gravel, similar to the terroir found in Graves, at an altitude of 15 metres above sea level. Vines are planted at a density of 6500 per hectare and crop at an average of 43 ht/ha.

Winemaking & Maturation

Grapes are received at a recently built state of the art winery where they are moved about by gravity or conveyer belts. They are sorted to remove any unripe grapes or debris before fermentation in steel vats and then aging in French oak barriques, some of which are new.

Tasting Note

Appearance: Dark ruby purple. Nose: Ripe red currant with liquorice and spiced plum notes too. Palate: Fairly rich fruit allied to ripe tannins and a hint of vanilla make for a smooth inviting well balanced wine.

Cellaring Potential

Moulin is designed to be attractive to drink when young but has the structure to be cellared for 5-6 years if required.

Food Recommendations

Roast meat and claret were seemingly made for one another but try this also with steak and kidney pie or hard cheeses.
