Winery
Cantine Leonardo was founded in 1961, and its first vintage was 1965. At the outset the co-operative sold wine in bulk, and it was only in 1971 that they began selling bottled wines. The cooperative has approximately 150 members, whose vineyards are located on the hilly areas around Vinci and Cerreto Guidi. The ethos of quality that has spread through every aspect of Leonardo’s operation since the arrival of Alberto Antonini as consultant winemaker at the end of 1996 remains a key element in their success.

Viticulture
2008 was quite difficult at the start of the growing season, with high rainfall in May and June. This was mitigated by perfect summer weather, with cool nights and warm days allowing the aromatic compounds in the grape skins to develop. The harvest took place between 22nd September - 10th October.
Winemaking & Maturation
Maceration on the skins took place during fermentation and lasted approximately eight days, together with frequent pumping over. Temperature control (28-29°C) during fermentation encouraged good colour and tannins while maintaining the rich fruit aromas characteristics of the grapes. Unoaked to maintain freshness and vivacity, the wine remained in temperature controlled tanks until March following the vintage.
Tasting Note
Light, bright cherry red in colour with a fresh, cherry and blackcurrant perfume on the nose. On the palate it combines a delicious fresh fruit character with an attractive savoury quality, soft, supple tannins and a rounded, cherryish finish.
