Seven leading vineyard owners in the Durbanville ward united to create DurStanding proud against the Tygerberg Hills, the state-of-the-art Durbanville Hills Winery looks out over Robben Island and Table Bay against the dramatic backdrop of majestic Table Mountain. A mere 20-minute drive from Cape Town’s centre, it is the closest winery to South Africa’s Mother City. Seven leading vineyard owners in the Durbanville ward united to create Durbanville Hills to promote the regional individuality of this prime wine growing area, which boasts a temperate climate with Atlantic sea breezes cooling the vines during the summer months. Grapes for this brand, which has already attracted widespread positive attention both in South Africa and abroad, are sourced only from these growers, all of whom fall under the limited appellation of Durbanville. All member vineyards are shareholders in Durbanville Hills and subscribe to IPW (Integrated Production of Wine) growing practices, designed to sustain natural resources. All the vineyards apply meticulous crop control to further limit yields and promote concentration of varietal flavour.
Viticulture
The area’s close proximity to the sea, with its gift of swirling mists in the morning and the cooling breeze late on hot summer afternoons, allows the grapes to develop leisurely and optimally in the shale-origin soils of the hills, giving the wines of Durbanville Hills their intense fruit flavours and finessed structure.
